Ask just about anyone why it's warm in the summer and cold in the winter, and there's a surprisingly high  probability you'll be audience to one of the most commonly held misconceptions in the field of Earth science.

The TILT is a 35-minute multimedia exploration of the reason behind Earth's annual cycle of changing seasons. The program examines the effect of changing angles of solar illumination as the Earth orbits the Sun with it's axis tilted at 23.5 degrees.

Highlights include:
  • visits to astronomically aligned structures from antiquity and modern times, all designed to track the seasons;
  • star-filled views of sunrise and sunset at various times of the year;
  • a trip to the North Pole; and
  • a study of life on an imaginary planet whose axis of rotation is NOT tilted in relation to the plane of its orbit - the planet Verticus.
The planetarium has been called the most powerful tool ever developed for science education. Our 30-foot hemispheric dome combines the power of a Spitz 512 automated star projector, digital multimedia and Dolby® surround sound to create an immersive learning experience your students will never forget!

A visit to the FSC Planetarium is time on task. The McAuliffe Center is committed to the development of original programming that meets the specific curriculum requirements of Massachusetts schools.
The TILT directly addresses the Massachusetts Science and Technology/Engineering Curriculum Frameworks, as well as National Science Education Standards objectives.
